Abstract

With the withdrawal of state-run public transport in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh in 2005, rural public transport operations are left with private transport operators who cater only to the rural growth centres or rural areas falling along urban-urban routes on a low scale. This makes rural commuters depend on personal vehicles and intermediate public transport. Upon examining the current scenario of rural transport in Madhya Pradesh, this study flags the issues and suggests viable options after an objective analysis. Of various options available, the Rural Transport Credit (RTC) Model has been preferred to the Gramin Maitri Model and the Aggregator model to meet rural transport demand. This study concludes by estimating the revenue generated under the RTC model, providing valuable evidence for developing an effective rural transport policy in Madhya Pradesh.
