Abstract

In the late eighties, the Nirmithi Kendras (NKs) were established in India to promote affordable construction and technological solutions for improving the housing situations. However, over the years, barring two or three southern states, these institutions have collapsed and become defunct. This note makes a strong plea for the need for revival and rejuvenation of NKs, which can play a crucial role in the housing ecosystem in rural and urban areas. With the central government’s big push for ‘Housing for All’, state-level housing schemes and demand for affordable, environment-friendly and sustainable housing, the role and potential of NKs may be reconsidered. A strong set of NKs will not only boost the housing ecosystem but also strengthen the local economy by creating local entrepreneurial avenues.
