Abstract

This paper, based on a bibliometric survey, examines the value chain of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) and underscores their complex socio-economic and environmental significance. NTFPs play a crucial role across sectors, contributing significantly to local economies and forest conservation. The study employs the Value Chain Analysis (VCA) Framework to explore the dynamics of NTFP commercialisation, focusing on the relationships among producers, intermediaries, and consumers. It identifies inefficiencies and bottlenecks within NTFP markets, illustrating how value is created and distributed at each stage of the process. The discussion highlights the diverse nature of NTFPs and their varying market demands, emphasising how these factors impact power dynamics among market actors. While shorter value chains enable producers to retain higher profits with minimal intermediary involvement, longer chains often result in reduced transparency and unequal profit distribution, leaving small-scale producers vulnerable to market fluctuations. The paper also discusses the importance of both formal and informal cooperatives in enhancing market access and negotiating better terms for producers. It identifies critical barriers, such as inadequate infrastructure and limited market information, that small-scale producers face in relying on intermediaries, which can undermine their profitability. To address these challenges, the scholars recommend diversifying NTFP products, regulating intermediaries, improving market transparency, and investing in infrastructure. By empowering small-scale producers through cooperatives and implementing gender-sensitive policies, the study advocates equitable participation in NTFP value chains, promotes sustainable practices, and enhances the livelihoods of rural communities.
