Abstract

In this introductory essay, the good governance aspects followed in the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme are discussed. Since the responsibility of implementing Mahatma Gandhi NREGS has been assigned to Panchayati Raj Institutions, especially gram panchayats, this paper provides a discussion on conceptual links between decentralisation and good governance practices in Mahatma Gandhi NREGS based on the scheme’s design. Summaries of the papers included in the special issue are also provided.
